Should You Tip Your Photographer?

Recently someone asked me about the tips I received as a Photographer.

As in, monetary tips. Not advice.

I’m sorry, what?

Having worked many years in the restaurant industry, I am not stingy with my tips. But maybe I’m stingy in who I tip? Because in all my years of being a Photographer, I cannot say that I’ve ever received - or given - a tip.

Actually, I will take that back. I did receive a ‘tip’ once from a very kind family who placed the winning bid on a large gift I had donated to a non profit fundraiser. They understood the time, effort, and quality ‘out of pocket’ expense of what I was providing them. They wanted to make sure that I wasn’t losing money, which I hesitated accepting but was grateful for their consideration.

More than tips, what I crave, honestly, are things like google reviews and written/typed testimonials. Not only do I take my reputation very seriously but I also know how much easier it is for others to find me if they are looking for a Photographer such as myself. Receiving another birth, newborn, or baby client due to a referral isn’t just a monetary gain but a heartfelt one that encourages me to grow and be better.

So if you are ever wondering about tipping your Photographer, ask them if they would rather a written review or a referral program. And if you’re one of my previous clients - mind writing me a google review? ;)
